Any help with this matter will keep me from doing many things I will regret...and it will be greatly appreciated.

My Setup:

  •  JVC KD-AVX33
  •  Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components
  •  Boston Acoustic SL95 6x9s
  •  (2) 12" JL Audio 12W3
  •  Orion HCCA 225G4 for the Subs
  •  JL Audio E1200 for the Kappas
  •  and some BS Pioneer amp for the SL95s

My Problem:

Every morning on the way to work my system works great. I work for Duke University conducting research so I love to be overtly obnoxious around the egomaniacal elite. Since I can't afford to park in the garage I have to leave my car in the scorching parking lot. Upon leaving in the afternoon I'll start my car up and drive off waiting for the stereo to play. ONce the CD begins to play the only thing that I can hear are the subs. I turn the stereo on and off a few times and open some cooling vents I made because the HU gets exceptionally hot. Eventually, I can hear some music coming from the rear deck, but its very low, as if it is off in the distance coming from sombody else's car. I've measuered my grounds with a DMM and they all check out fine. The amps all get adequate power, so I'm left scratching my head and 2 and half seconds from running my fist straight through the HU.

By the time I leave my second job in the evening the problem seems to have gone away?!?! Why does it only work in the early morning and late evening. I didn't pay that much money for an HU that has a set schedule of when IT wants to play.  Does this make any sense to anybody? I recently finished making some custom speaker pods and I'd love to fully experience the fruit of my labor. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something painfully obvious, but I'm just worn out from 2 jobs and this neverending project. Please Help Me!

Sounds like a defective head unit or mains amplifier that is being affected by the heat.

Thanks DY. I was afraid of that, but at least I know where I stand. I appreciate the fast reply too.

I would suspect the HU first, actually, as JVC is not a very reliable brand.

I guess that' s what I get for being impatient.

I did a fair amount of research on it before making the purchase, but I'm beginning to suspect that Crutchfield, among others, is a biased organization. Do you think it would be worth my time and money to send it in for service? I'm guessing when your purchase crap, then you send crap in to get fixed, you will inevitably get crap back. Also, if you don't mind, where would you recommend going to get good, unbiased reviews? As you can probably tell, I haven't be very brand loyal. That's atypical of my character, but all I can say is you've gotta start somewhere and JVC is definitely off the list.

Take an RCA cable out of one of your High amps, plug it into the sub amp.  If the sub amp plays now, you do not have a problem with your radio.

I just ran out to the car to try your suggestion and wouldn't you know it? Its not acting a fool. Although I have tried numerous troubleshooting options I may not have tried the one you've suggested. I will try it out later  this afternoon and let you know how it goes. I appreciate it.

That's because it trembles at the power of the12volt

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Haha. So very true.

Tonight after I replace my catalytic converter I will try the RCA switch and also go though and make sure all of my gains are set correctly. If that doesn't clear things up for me I'm taking everything JVC that I own to the shooting range.
