I also posted this question over at sounddomain, but this forum seems to be much more active.
Hey guys,
Around Christmas time last year i installed a set of CDT ES-620's in my audi a4. I am powering them with a hifonics two channel amp.
Recently during high volume i have heard "popping" sounds, kind of sounded like the mid was bottoming out or something. Today i removed the door to take a look and see if there was any visible damage. Upon removal everything looked fine. I turned the stereo on a low volume and I could hear a buzzing sound coming from the speaker. To make sure it was coming from the speaker i removed it from the door with the wires still connected and still heard the buzzing noise.
Now to me this sounds like I probably have blown my driver, or there is some sort of damage. If this is the case what do you guys who have dealt with CDT before think I should do? Just buy another set of mids? Or should i try and send my speaker out to get it fixed by CDT?

Yes, sounds like you blew a driver, probably the woofer, and probably due to over-excursion.  Contact CDT and tell them the model number of your set and they can sell you a replacement driver if one is available.  If you are happy with the sound of the speakers, no need to replace everything unless you have to.  And next time use a HP filter on the components - or don't turn it up so loud.  did i blow one of my cdt's? -- posted image.

Yea its definitely the woofer, thanks for the reply. I will def. adjust the HPF before i install a new one. Another question though: If I end up having to send out my woofer for repair, would it hurt my system to run everything w/o the one missing woofer?(The entire left side would be hooked up, on the right side only the tweeter would be connected to the crossover). I didn't know if this would change the impedances or anything.
Thanks for replies!

It would be okay.  The crossover will protect the tweeter.  While it is true you are removing a resistive load, it won't change the load of the tweeter at the crossover and neither will it affect the other channel.  The impedance load on that amp channel should remain about the same as before (bear in mind that the crossover "steers" the power to the two drivers according to frequency).  The sound in the meantime, however, will be severely lacking ;).  (Be sure to tape off all bare wire connections.)
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

thank you again! I'm happy to know that i will at least be able to listen to music if i have to ship it off! So onto a more specific question, have any of you dealt with CDT customer service before? I want to know if i should try to call and try to get it repaired or if it would just be easier to buy a new driver.
Thanks!
