Well, first off, this is my first post here and for good reason. I need a little advice.
I drive a 1997 Toyota 4Runner limited. Several years back I bought a set of CDT Audio CL-61's because they were recommended for "best bang for buck" value and I got a really sweet deal on them because of a "wrong paint" issue at the factory. The info says they need a 90 watt RMS amp. I assume this is 90 watt for each 6.5" speaker, correct? The components are 4ohm, btw.
Ok, so shortly after I bought these components, a friend of mine had an amp for sale that was practically brand new. It's a Profile California AP600 and is stated to have 100 Watt RMS x 2 at 4 Ohm. So, basically what I'm asking is if I have a set of 90 watt RMS 4 ohm CDT Audio CL-61 components and one Profile California AP600 amp rated at 100 RMS x 2 at 4 Ohm, will having 10 Watt RMS over the CL-61 specs hurt my speakers? If so then would a Rockford Fosgate Punch 150a2 which is rated at 37.5 RMS x 2 at 4 Ohm be too little? Do I have to have a speaker that is exactly 90 watts RMS x 2 or will it hurt to be a little over or a little under? I've also read about different amps being under/over rated, so how does this factor into the confusing car audio equation? I was given that Rockford Fosgate 150a2 amp for free, btw.
I try, I really do, but I just can't seem to understand car audio and how to configure speaker and amp setups.
Ok, here is part two of my question. My same friend that I bought the Profile California AP600 amp from had 1-12" MTX Audio Thunder 6000 sub that he gave me for free. He said it still works. I have checked it and found no rips or anything to make me doubt what he said. After all, it was given to me for free, so even if it doesn't work then I'm not out any money on it. I don't know anything about the sub other than it's 4 Ohm because it says so in small letters on the bottom part of the sub. How do I know if it's a Single Voice Coil or a Double? Does this matter when trying to find an amp? I tried to search for info on the MTX Audio Thunder 6000 sub and found a place that said it needed around 250 RMS. I also have a Rockford Fosgate Punch 200a1, but I can't find any specs on this amp. It must be old. Could I use this amp with that 1 - 12" MTX Audio Thunder 6000 sub? If not then advise me on a decent/cheap amp.
I can build a small box for it and find some installation help here. I don't have extra money to spend on buying a sub and another amp, so if the RF Punch 200at1 won't work with the MTX Audio Thunder 6000 sub then I'll just do without having a subwoofer, for now or until I get some cash, and just install the component set. I've had these component speakers and the Profile California AP600 amp just sitting around for a while now, so I think it's about time to put it to use and get away from the factory stereo system. I've got an old friend I could get to help me install everything. I could probably do it all by myself as long as I had step-by-step instructions. I hope some of you can answer my questions. Once I figure out what I need, then the installation shouldn't be too hard for me.

HI and welcome.  Loudspeaker power ratings are maximums, not what the speaker "needs."  If your CDT set is rated at 90 watts per channel, then you can safely provide any power up to 90 watts continuous to the speaker and it will work just fine.  Same for the subwoofer, if it is rated at 250 watts, anything up to 250 watts will be fine.  Now as far as the Profile amp you have, those amps are very over-rated and tend to be noisy.  Please read the "How to set your gain" sticky post and be very careful to ensure that amp is not clipping if you use it.  If it was me, I'd dump it on FleaBay and get something better.  The RF amp will work fine with the MTX subwoofer, make sure you use a proper enclosure for the woofer and that you set the gain on it properly as well.

Ok, thanks for the info. Your answer was exactly what I was looking for. I'll check into a different amp for the components. Any recommendations for decent budget amp? I'll also check out that sticky thread you recommended.

What's your budget, and do you want a 2-channel or 4-channel amp?

I don't think I'd need a 4 channel amp just yet, so a 2 channel would suffice with the modest set up I'm trying to achieve, for the time being. I'd probably like to stick between $100-$200, if possible, yet I don't want a POS amp either. Apparently, I made a bad choice in buying this Profile amp. There are just too many amps to pick from especially not having much car audio experience.
