What would you suggest in a pair of 6x8's for rear speakers in my 79 cougar? What would be a good brand and model to go with?

What is your budget?   There are many good choices you could go with but to better help you we need some kinda of price range.

The best 6X8s, or any other speaker for that matter, are the ones YOU like best.  Go shopping.  Take your favorite CD along.  Buy from your local retailers.

Only a wally world?  Where do you live?

Some people like Pioneer.  I was never impressed by them.  They sound thin and distorted to me, like Sony speakers.  Or Kenwood.

In your price range ( on-line pricing, at least) I like the sound from Infinity Kappa, Alpine Type S, or Eclipse SP series.  Remember that 5X7 and 6X8 are basically the same speakers and generally mount in the same openings, so you are not limited to 6X8 only.

What do you mean by they sound thin?
Infinity Kappas sound great, but I'm biased towards Infinity and Polk. I think everything from them sounds great.

I live in a very small town in kansas where the options are these two small audio stores and walmart... I refuse to buy from either audio shops becuase they are highly overpriced for one and second they are just not good people to do buisiness with and are not  willing to listen and work with customers...

and thanks for the info I didnt know that about the speaker sizes...

How highly overpriced? Is there service also not something that you pay for or are you expected to give an order for speakers like going through the drive thru? Do they sell better speakers than the other people? What are the speakers that are overpriced? Get the info, let us know and let the people who know the pricing help you with the decision on how to proceed.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
