Just looking for opinions. I had an Alpine SWR-1242D in a ported box. I gave it to my son when his Mighty L-7 Kicker fried itself. I've ordered a Rockford P3D412 and another ported box. I''ll be running it with 450 watts RMS from a 2 channel amp. I had the Alpine in a Bassworx ported box model HPR12G, and I thought the sound was pretty decent for a 54 yr old hippie. Thing was, I thought the Bassworx box looked "goofy". I orderd an Atrend ported box model 12LSV. It has a lot "cleaner" look to it. Now I know that that aint how you judge a sub box.  But funds are limited right now (as with most folks) .Does anyone think that I'll get the same sound quality? I mostly listen to XM classic rock, contemporary music, some country. I'm certainly not looking to "shake the ground"! Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

the big difference ive had with the P3 is that the cone of the sub is very brittle, so make sure to put a grill on it. but if your not going to try and "shake the ground" you should be fine. good luck

Subwoofers are as good as the box you put them in.You can get almost any decent subwoofer to sound good if its in a good enclosure.

Both are good subs, I've owned the P3 12's and was very pleased with their performance. Like it's been said, the cone is a little brittle (I had a stray wrench go through one of m cones) but if you put a cover over it or simply make sure there's nothing rolling around in your trunk that will damage the cone, you're golden. However, if you're rockin out to anything other than hip hop and r&b, I wouldn't go with a 12" in a ported. A 10" or even 8" in a sealed enclosure with a good amp would be more suited to the kind of music you listed. The 12" will be plenty loud in that box, but the combination will give you a somewhat sloppy sound. A 10" with its smaller surface area, is able to react faster to the audio signal than a 12" (simple physics less mass=easier to move), and that combinded with a sealed enclosure, will have a much tighter sound than that of a ported box. So, those quick double bass hits will come off as a "THUMP THUMP THUMP" rather than a "THUUuuuuuTHUUuuuuTHUUuuuD"

hey. are you powering your infinity door speakers with just your alpine HU? or an amp let me know. because i have a CDE-9843 powering 6022i 6 1/2 and it makes static noises when i crank up the volume.

None of the above. I have a stock HU that is in my 08 HHR. I've got two Kenwood amps in the space between the spare tire cover tray and the removeable rear cover in the back. One is a 4 channel Kenwood KAC X-40 that has 70 watts rms.  Also I have a Kenwood KAC9103D powering a Rockford/Fosgate P3 12" sub in a large ported box.  It can put out around 900 watts rms, but I don't have it turned up very much, 'cause the sub will handle 450 watts rms.The front speakers are Infinity 2-way ( stock system has a tweeter in the front pillar) model 60.9CS they will handle 90 watts rms The rear are MB Quart  DKF-116 and they are rated @ 120 watts rms. All of this is fed to a Soundstream  MPQ-7XO EQ. It may not be the latest and greatest, but I think it sounds damn fine.

I will be honest. If you want hard hitting bass that will rattle ur teeth then get the rockfords. if you sound quality get the Alpines. I had the P3's and those things hit hard. nothing but bass that will give u a headache.

To imupabove: I must say that I'm not your typical 53 - year old. I have a Kenwood 9103D amp that I have turned up about 70% that feeds the Rockford-Fos. I'm not really going for "balls to the wall, look at me!!" type sound. And after having compared the two, the Alpine IS more my style. The Alpine is in my son's car, and I expect to hijack it back just about any time. I just need to get a little more break-in time on the P3. My son is 20, and his music preference is more suited to the P3 , whereas my tastes are somewhat more refined and I've already experienced my share of hearing loss.!! And besides, he doesn't know what "sub break-in time" is. He has the same amp set up that I have and so far he hasn't been able to hurt the Alpine at all. All in all, I have a decent set up, and I imagine it would attract more attention if I had that in mind. Perhaps I need to ride through " the 'hood " playing some Hank jr and see what happens. Lmao!!
