Y'all..
Looking for opinions i guess...
When is the appropriate time to port a box vs sealed?
I've made a couple mdf boxes in the past they were always sealed... always sound great... i made 1 ported box (didn't know i needed specific measurements at the time) and it sounded good too. SO i guess what i'm wondering is when should a box be ported? When not? i've always thought a box should be ported for BIG speakers like 15"s and up...
Can someone tell me what the actually difference is also?
I want to know once and for all..
Thanks guys..sealed vs ported -- posted image.
Look twice, think thrice, 1 splice/ 1 slice!
This is a phrase i came up with and something i will now live by.

The appropriate time is when it is the appropriate enclosure type for the speaker being used.  Research Efficiency Bandwidth Product.  http://www.ajdesigner.com/phpsubwooferclosed/efficiency_bandwidth_product_equation.php

The alignment of the system is ALWAYS decided by the desired response. Some drivers will not perform adequately in one type of enclosure, or one box might be to large or too small to be tuned practically, so in that case the necessary enclosure SHOULD be chosen: sealed vs. vented. The necessary enclosure is dictated by the parameters of the driver.
Short answer: There is rarely a hard coded right or wrong answer.
BTW, I like the sig... sealed vs ported -- posted image. I also like "You can cut it off twice, but it'll STILL be too short!"
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Okay..just had a chance to take a quick look at that link.. and i'm confused..
it just seems that the output/frequency ratio is slightly prefer (i'm assuming) in a ported box faster that a sealed one.

Yes, you do seem confused.  :)  What exactly are you trying to say?  There is nothing about anything being "faster" in the material I linked you to.

Good argument but the bottom line in how do you want your low end sounding?  If you want a tight bass sealed, if you want boomie ported is this the answer your looking for.  Of course all subs have different sounds for different boxes so it could come down to space also.

hopes this helps

Bottom line...your "bottom line" statement about sealed and ported is incorrect.
How an enclosure sounds depends on the design and loading environment.
Sealed enclosures can sound boomy and sloppy. Ported enclosures can sound better and "tighter" as you say than sealed. It is all about the design.
Your statement seems to come from a lot of noobs who only know of prefab crap ported enclosures that are made to be boomy and sound like crap by the nature of the small volume and high tuning.

in the diagram looks like the ported box gains decibels faster..
