necessary port size

I have just finished constructing a box for my 2006 tundra to fit under my backseats.  The box dimensions are 43x3x7.5. and the box is made out of 5/8" particle board.  I will be running 4 kicker cvt 8's in this box.  Thecubic area is .71 and .8 is the minimum recommendation from kicker.  I was wondering how big of a port i should put in this box for optimum running?

If those are inside dimensions i'm only comming up with .56 cubic ft. or .14 cubic ft. per speaker. I think thats too small for a ported box, not to mention the displacement of the speaker and port. I think you should just make a sealed box, just my opinion.

i am so sorry the dimensions are wrong. wow. okay the dimensions are 43x3x9.5 inches.  i will be runing the speakers two channel and in addition placed a 5/8" particle board divider directly in the middle. sorry for the wrong dimensions. should i still port it.

Those speakers require .8 each or 3.2 cubic feet total for ported and sealed is .4 each or 1.6 total but you are still only at .71cubic ft total and .18 each. I had put 4 - 8's in my colarado with .25 sealed each and it sounded ok. I would build a sealed box which will be still too small but you can try it. It won't play very low but probably can handle more power. Most people will say just use 2 - 8"s but I say put them all in and see what happens.

madmaz, we suggest you start your box project over.  Use minimum 3/4 MDF, well braced.  5/8 is too thin even for high density particle board, unless you double up on all baffles.

I say "we" because there is nobody on this forum who would disagree with this.

As far as size...don't use anything smaller than the smallest recommended size.  Keep in mind that the smallest given sizes are already compromising SPL and SQ but they are given so that people can fit them into their vehicles.  Use as close to maximum recommended size box as possible in every case.  Sometimes, if you don't have enough room in the car, you have to pare down the number of subs you can run.

I don't agree with Eric to let us know how it sounds, in the way you suggest you are building it (although it was a kind gesture on his part to say so).  Weak, thin particle board and too small of airspace can lead to nothing but crap.  That's pretty much why a lot of prefab boxes are crappy.

And BTW, you have absolutely no room to give up to ports as they will take up some of that airspace that is already too small.  I don't know how far along you are with this project or if you already have the speakers, so I can only advise based on your questions.  But I think you will be disappointed in the sub base response.  But they could prolly scream at 80 to 120 Hz!

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
