i have a 2002 monte carlo, i'm bypassing the entire stock system, i've got ground and switched 12v hooked up... where is an appropriate place to get a constant 12v?

If your talking aftr mrkt deck going in the dash somewhere, run a fused 10 guage from the battery to a distribution block behind stereo.
This is what I do for FUN!

and, i've got two red wires at the ignition, does it matter which one it is?

Test the wires to make sure it is a constant 12 volt source. Use a multi meter

Still assuming your powering a after market deck....if you intend to use the speaker outputs, the 10ga is a good idea. You can fuse it around 40a (within 18" of battery) and then have a decent power source for any future needs. Bypass the stock system like your saying. Then there's less risk of possibly damaging the vehicles electrical system in the event of a short circuit. Adding current to a unknown line over time can result in problems too.
