I've got one ALUM12N sub and A8002T amplifier... I had purchased these a long back and when I did, I was totally blind with car audio stuff and just got them on a sweet sale deal. Just planning to put them on my trunk and after doing some research, I've realized that its not the perfect match of sub and amp...
I was wondering if it would be possible to wire the two voice coils separately to the two channels as the amp is capable of pushing 400 watts @ 2 ohms per channel and I am assuming that the driver can handle approx 500 watts per channel @ 3ohms?
Following are the specs of the two... would appreciate if someone can suggest me the best possible wiring that I can achieve with these two...
ALUM12N Specs:
Subwoofer Size - 12"
Voice Coil(s) - Dual (2 voice coils)
Impedance (per voice coil) - 6 ohms
Peak Power Handling - 2000 watts
RMS Power Handling - 1000 watts
A8002T Specs:
Amplifier Class - AB
Number of Channels - 2
RMS Power (4 ohms) - 200 watts x 2 channels
RMS Power (2 ohms) - 400 watts x 2 channels
RMS Power (1 ohm) - N/A
Bridged RMS Power - 800 watts x 1 channel
Total RMS Power Output - 800 watts
Peak Power Output - 1600 watts x 1 channel
Total Peak Power Output - 1600 watts
Minimum Impedance Unbridged - 2 ohms
Minimum Impedance Bridged - 4 Ohms
THD at Rated RMS Power - 0.02%
High-Pass Crossover Frequency - 50 - 750 Hz
Low-Pass Crossover Frequency - 50 - 120 Hz
Subsonic Filter - 20 - 50 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio - 100 dB

A 6 Ohm stereo load will be fine, the amp will only produce about 150 Watts/Channel in that configuration, but it is really the only safe way to run what you have.

firstly, thanks to "the12volt" team for this wonderful portal. I've learned a lot from the forum articles. After all the research that I did, I was able to plot 4 different wiring configurations with the ALUM12N and A8002T. Attached image has the details and following is what I feel about each of the wiring option... Experts, I need your valuable inputs on these...
Option 1: This will be a 3-Ohms load on the bridged output of that amp that can handle a minimum of 4-Ohms load with a power output of 800 Watts. IMO, the amp is under-powered to handle this load and might get heated up.
Option 2: Powering just one voice coil, it will be a 6-Ohms load that can handle 500 Watts power output (My understanding is that if the DVC sub can handle 1000 watts continous RMS, its 500 Watts per voice coil). The bridged output of the amp can handle a load of min. 4-Ohms impedance and can deliver 800 Watts. Since the load is 6-Ohms, the max power that can be realized will be approx. 600 Watts, which I think the driver can handle.
Option 3: 12-Ohms load to the bridged output of the amp. The max. power that we can realize will be less than 200 Watts.
Option 4: Powering the two voice coils in stereo mode with the amp. In this configuration, as one of the experts have already suggested, the amp will producce a max. of just 150 Watts / channel. I am also wondering if this might be an issue if both the coils receive different signals in stereo mode.
I feel that option 2 will be the best for a good sound output and safe for the equipments. Since the driver has capacity to handle a max. of 1000 watts / channel and continous RMS of 500 watts / channel (assumed based on the specs. posted for both channels combined). Again, I am not an expert in this area and its quite possible that my assumptions are wrong. Request the experts to correct / direct me with the right configuration.
Thanks for all your help.

your question WAS answered on the FIRST response.
Run it in stereo at 6 OHMS.

calm down, icearrow... i m not blind... and of course, i can see that my first post has been answered...
i have responded with a few other configuration and all i wanted to know was... if option 2 on my second post was better than what was suggested earlier!
would help if someone can answer that

I don't like using just a single voice coil.
although the option 2 will work, i don't think that its a "better" setup.
I would sell the amp, and find your self a monoblock amp.

Mount the woofer in the box with a set of wires running to each voice coil.  First bridge the amp to one of the coils.  Listen to that for a few days.  Then connect one coil to each channel of the amp, listen to that for a few days, then let us know which way sounds better to you.

Your ears will be the true "judge" And I am guessing they will not hear a HUGE diff.

This woof alone (by itself) does NOT offer much at all. Get another one!

thanks, everyone for the inputs.
I agree with KarTuneMan that these are not the best of woofers and there's nothing great that you can expect from them... however, i am hard up right now, after spending on an Alpine CDA9887 HU, Rockford Fosgate T152S component speakers and a Rockford Fosgate T400-4 amp to replace the factory setup...
I am planning to go for the JL 8W7 sub powered by a RF mono amp later in the future (may be after a couple of months)... till then I need to satisfy my ears with the audiobahn!
would be taking some time to install these as I am planning to do it all by myself (not lucky enough to have good installers around this part of the world)... will be sure to post the results..
