So here is the deal. I'm trying to put in a aftermarket HU for my friend. I know for a fact that she does NOT have a Bose system. How do I tell if it is an amplified system?
But more importantly I keep hearing different ideas, and views about the swap. What I need to know is do I need to keep the stock HU? Also what wiring harnesses should I use and that good information.
The only other HU I replaced was in a 92' Ford Ranger hahaha. So I know this will be a very different install. Whatever information I can be supplied with is most helpful.

I did not take the time to look but I am pretty sure that is the vehicle that has the tuner/amplifier in the trunk of the car.  There is a wiring harness available.  It has to be plugged into the OEM wires in the trunk of the vehicle and routed to the front of the car.  Some of the hands on guys will let us know if I am thinking of a different year vehicle.

If you get no other help, remove the radio from the dash, if there is no antenna plugged into the radio, that is the one that needs the long harness.

Ok. Do you happen to know the one that is the one with the long wires and such? If there is a antenna plugged then I'm good to just rip it out and put in the HU?

I would not rip it out, but it is OK to replace the radio either way.  A 20 dollar wiring harness and a 6 dollar antenna adapter if it has an antenna plugged into the unit in the dash.  A 50 or 60 dollar harness and the time to run it to the back of the vehicle.  It comes with the antenna adapter.

You do not need to relocate the OEM radio.  You can put it in your closet if you like.  The piece inside your dash is simply a control head.  The amplifier and tuner is mounted in the trunk of your car.  That is where all the wires to connect a radio are located.  The harness extends those wires to the dash so you can connect the aftermarket deck.

OOOO. So what your saying is the wires run from the trunk? Not right there near the dash like in some other vehicles? Pretty much the brain is in trunk.

Also I'm pretty sure it's the Deville Concours. I know it has the 4.7 V8 in it, and the 5 1/4s in the front door. So does this automatically put it in the amplified/tuner in the truck category?

According to metra that car does not need the long harness. It uses a GM-OS3.  I think they are a bit more expensive than the long harness.

I'm pulling up a GMRC-03, GM-10 antenna adapter, and 99-2004 kit. Probably run you around $115 for all of it.
There has been some problems by not relocating the factory stereo, which this harness can not do though. sleep mode problem(no interior power until ignition, flashing dash, remote lock doesn't work)
I would recommend finding your all your wires and labeling them. Then running your databus wire back to the trunk, grab constant 12v, and ground in the trunk by the amp and cut the harness and move your factory head unit back there. Connect constant, ground, and databus and then do the deck install as normal from there. Very advanced install this way and I would probably not recommend doing this if your only deck install is in a 92 Ranger. Take it to a pro.
Or you could buy the harness adapters and basically lose the functions mentioned above.
