factory radio use in 2000 impala

Factory radio is installed in trunk.  Having all kinds of "gremlin" electrical problems.  Install of aftermarket amp, radio, speakers done by xxxtoys.  The guys at that location have done some good work for years on several of my vehicles.  I went through the archives and this seems to have been settled by 2004.  The factory radio is a RDS, which at that time also meant it was linked into the PCM to run the car.  Had resets for the acceleramators that give you the ABS signal, and low tire pressure.

What CAN I do? is there a way to bypass the old radio?  I understand that some are actually linked by the vin to the car....  Should I just concentrate on running a new harness from the old system to the car harness?  Which wires (color codes here) are actually carrying data...?

This is my daughters car, we have had everything from alarms going off at 70mph, to front lights flashing, starting issues, and starting to develop others.

The factory radio won't likely be the cause of any of those issues. The radio has nothing to do with the ABS system. The radio is turned on through a data message from the BCM (Body Control Module). The reason you need to retain it, is so you can still control a few of the features that are controlled via the radio, such as the chimes and oil life. You can easily relocate the radio with 5 wires. Battery, ground, Class II data, and the left front speaker wires (+ and -). The speaker wires can be hooked up to an external speaker to emit the vehicle chimes. If you really want to find out whether the factory radio is causing a problem, simply unplug it for a few days. I would also suggest that you check both battery terminals to insure they are clean and corrosion free. Clean the battery ground cable that is bolted just below and rearward of the battery to the frame rail.sparky
