to grill or not to grill?

Hello All.

First let me say this is by far my favorite forum. I think I’ve read, and learned more in this forum than all other combined.

But on to my question, in my door install I have a 5.25” Sony, and a 6.5” peerless. The Sony’s have a grill cover and the peerless do not. I am wondering if anyone has any input on the effect of the grills on SQ. I think I’m going to remove the grills from the Sony’s and make a guard of sorts to protect both drivers. Should I expect any increase in either SQ or SPL from the Sony’s???

Most of the SQ setups that I have seen have grills, so I do not think that they will negatively impact SQ, but I'll let someone who knows more about this give you a more definitive answer.

You could probably make your own grill out of some mesh. You could even make one for the sony too so that the grills match better and blend the aesthetics.

While researching on the net, I see allot of installs without grills. I wasnt sure if people do this for SQ, or if its just that they like the look of the drivers? Myself i like the look without grills, but replacing drivers because i kicked the cone out isnt an option. So protection for them is a must. Just not sure how I will do it. I could machine up a set to match the sonys. Either way, they will be covered.

Thats a good idea.

Now im thinking of something like a small brush guard to keep with the 4 wheel drive thyme. Maybe something like this but small enough to cover the drivers. Then again that maybe kind of cheesy? What do you guys think?

I think I will try the brush guard look. I'll be sure to post pics of the project when i start it. Ill be a vacation for week, maybe ill try and photo shop a mock up and post it later.
