I have no experience with these squares whatsoever, but the shop i work at does sell them, so, i just wanted a little general info on them as regards to the shape and the way it affects sound so i could have some insight when customers pose questions. Thanks in advance.

Square = out of phase.
Reminds me of non-round headlights & their "evolution" - not many non-round reflectors eh?

Soundstream is the line we carry, but if you could shed some light on the other two brands i would appreciate it.

The BIGGEST technical problem is the corners... The linearity of the surround there is ALWAYS a problem.
For this reason alone, a square driver will ALWAYS exhibit higher distortion numbers than a round driver. You'll never see a true high fidelity woofer shaped that way.
The only reason for a square diaphragm is for more surface area, (in THEORY, for more output...) and there isn't very much of that, either. Certainly not enough to make up for the lower fidelity, in THIS reporter's opinion. MAYBE an easier installation, as a square hole is easier to cut than is a circle, but then you have to make certain it is square with the box, as it would definitely be more noticeable if it were a little bit "off".

as haemphyst said square subs are shaped that way to be louder. when pushed reasonably hard the corners will distort and this sometimes lead to the cone cracking in half. if you dont drive them very hard they will last just fine however the distortion caused by the shape can be very noticeable. ive never personally dealt with the soundstream square subs so i cant tell you how they stack up against a kicker L7 but in my opinion i will take a round sub over a square any day of the week.
