2 kicker 10, free air application

Well what about two kicker 10" woofers in a free air application.  both woofers 4 ohm..rated at 150 watts RMS 300 max wired parallel.

Would a Pionner 7500 Class D which produces 400 watts RMS at 2 ohms be enough power for these Subs or would

it be better to move up to the Pioneer 8500 which is listed as 600 RMS watts at 2 ohms. The goal here is to have the least amount of distortion

as possible without straining the amplifier or over powering the subs.  Thanks for any advice

No, ANY woofer can be used this way, but only a few will be optimized.  There is nothing wrong with using any woofer any way you want to as long as you pay attention to its limitations and can be satisfied with the results.

OK, you CAN, but do you want to? 

  At one time, pioneer, kicker and probably others did offer a Free air specific Woofer. These woofers would work in a large enclosure.  The free air woofers have a much stiffer suspension to control cone movement without the back pressure of a box.  They also had the same model woofers that  were not for free air, were much "looser" and worked better in a smaller box.  (the last example I can think of is the Pioneer tsw251c and tsw251f, or the tsw301f and tsw301c)  The only difference between the "c" and the "f" was free air or enclosure.

 I dont sell kicker anymore, but when I last did, there was NO model that worked Free air.

As of right now, Pioneer only has one woofer the say can be used Free air and it is the 8" air suspension shallow mount sub. 

So YOU CAN, but do you want too?  If you have a high power capable sub with a stiff suspension give it a go!, But know that they work BETTER in an enclosure.
