2005 Ford Explorer has two factory harnesses connected to the stock factory radio. One of the harnesses was relatively straightforward whereas the other one only has two wires, one gray and one yellow. What gives? What are those two wires for? Furthermore, how is the illumination/dimmer connected? Thanks in advance!

Does the Grey wire  possibly have a black stripe on it?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it may have a black stripe on it. What about the yellow wire? Airbag contact?

I doubt that it has anything to do with the airbag.  It is not needed to install an aftermarket radio.  All wires you need are on the big harness.

illumination...RED / black. the vehicle can still have the steering wheel control lead, even with none present. only one yellow wire present at radio connectors.
