sony xplod 1200w kit

I just picked up a sony xplod 1200W subs and amp off of craigslist. I looked up guides online, but i have a couple of questions. Apparently this is a class D amplifier. That means that is is 80% or more efficient. This means not a lot of heat dissipation? I saw a best buy amp install video and they said that if you have an amp that doesn't get very hot, you can tuck it away behind some of the plastic of an SUV. I have a 1995 Subaru Legacy Outback. I think I have the perfect place to put the amp. The thing is there won't be much air flow. It will definitely get hot. Would it still be safe for me to tuck this amp in the trunk behind some trim? Also There is some crazy Cyllinder type thing hanging off the left of the sub woofer. Has two bolts coming out of the top. for negative and positive? and it also has a digital display that shows amps? or something like that. I'd appreciate the info anyone can provide. Thanks. I probably would not put the amp behind plastic. That crazy cylinder thingy... is a Capacitor. I will leave the rest of the investigating up to you. You can search for Capacitor's on this site to read up on what you have. The Cap shows Voltage, BTW. * as a side note, make sure to fuse the power wire close to the battery and re-tighten all those connection points that are in the Power/Ground. Make sure you obtain a good, solid, low resistance ground! Make sure the connectors going to the amp are nicely crimped and dont have movement in the wire where its crimped. Looks like you have some distribution blocks too... again make sure ALL connections are tight...Cheers!M.E.C.P & First-Class

First off, I hope you didn't give more than about $100.00 for that entire mess, and even THAT'S being generous... Anything more than $50.00, and I hope you got a date and dinner out of it. That being said, NO! DO NOT INSTALL THAT AMP BEHIND ANY PANELS. Even Class D amplifiers must breathe. 1200W out, (uh, huh... with a lightning bolt tapped to the power terminals...) at 80% efficiency still means that the heatsink still has to dissipate 240 watts, which is still a lot of heat...It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Amazon. Retail. Those are Swap-o-Rama woofers, at best. $20.00 all day here in Bakersfield. That amp? Two, 30A fuses in the end of it, means at BEST, you'll get 860 watts INTO it. Add losses, at 20%, 175 watts, and you're left with about 700 watts to come out of it! Now... is 700 watts equal to 1200 watts? Nuff said. Caps are worth little to nothing anytime, let alone with a "1200 watt" Sony amplifier.It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. Sony amplifiers, in my experience (had a 1000watt model from wal-mart years ago) tend to get REALLY hot. Which means, most of its power is being turned into heat anyway. And to add to that, you will not see 700 watts out of it ever. If you do, it sure as hell wont be clean.8 speaker stock bose system
