first system in car, monte carlo

hello i have recently purchased a 99 monte carlo and i am looking to add some subs in the trunk. i have been thinking about 2 12s in ported boxes and i had a few questions about that. will the subs sound muffled since there in the trunk? if the ports were to come up into the cab area somehow would that eliminate "muffled" sound and sound better. i was thinking about running the ports into the cab under the back glass. also would a sealed box still give plenty of sound in the cab? i have never messed with ported boxes before and so i do not know much about them. i was planning on buying 2 pioneer champion series pro subs which i also have a question about... according to pioneers page the sub only needs .5--1 cu ft air space, would it still sound good in a bigger box? i have some experience with building a system with sealed boxes but i am clueless when it comes to ported boxes so any advice would be great

sending the ports up through the back deck is usually not a good idea if you want something to sound good. contrary to popular belief most of the sound still comes from the sub woofer even in a ported box. the port only serves to boost a narrow frequency band of the sub woofers over all frequency response. being in the trunk of a car does have some impact on how the sub sounds, depending on how well the trunk is built and insulated from the cabin you might not notice any muffling of the sound or if the trunk is well insulated then you might have to find a way to open the wall up to let in more sound or go with a different setup design all together. ive never dealt with those subs so i cant shed any light as to how they perform in that air space, i will say that if those are the subs im thinking of then they most likely are strictly competition subs and arent built to be very musical, which that would explain why they recommend such a small box. if you can post a picture or a link to your model of sub woofer then i might be able to tell you more.

sorry cant figure out how to put pics up.    i had a 10" version of this sub in an s10 on an 700 watt amp and it thumped hard.

also i have another question, do subs put out the same sound in a ported box if you install them backwards with the magnet out of the box. what are the pros and cons?

the reason they recommend such a small box is that this is a shallow mount subwoofer meant for tight installations. usually these subs dont do good in ported boxes mainly because they are designed specifically for sealed boxes. if you have the space for a bigger ported box then you typically wouldnt choose to buy a shallow mount sub. i havent reverse mounted enough subs to know what the difference in sound is, but i can say that you shouldnt do it. there is no real benefit and it makes it easier to damage the sub because all of the working parts are exposed including the terminal connections. people who reverse mount subs usually only do it for show.
