Recently, I replaced a Custom Auto sound Head unit with a Retro-Sound head unit. I have a Eclipse 4 channel amp, a ten inch woofer, and a off brand subwoofer amp. After about a week, the audio quit working. The head unit and amps power-up, the mute control is off, but no audio unless the volume is up to maximum. Then you can just barely hear the audio like the amps are not boosting the signal. I have a 1956 210 Chevy.

Assuming the mute really is off, it sounds like the line outs on your head unit may have died.

also you can check the settings on your amp, sometimes there is a gain multiplier switch and you possibly pressed it by accident, this can cause it to seem like the audio is really low depending on how it was originally set.
also check the fade and balance settings on the radio, its possible that if the amps are being fed off of a single set of outputs then if you fade the audio all the way to the opposite output then it would cause the audio to be really low

The only place there is a mute button is on the remote control. I put new batteries in it, and every function seems to work. I wish it was the mute button.
