bass knob clipping light to set gains?

I've never used a bass knob and always just controlled the sub level via head unit, but noticed the remote bass control for my sundown amp has a clipping indicator on it. Can this be used to set amp gains? How accurate is it compared to a SMD DD meter? When checking the signal with an oscope, how distorted does the signal have to become before the bass knob clipping indicator turns on? This site has a similar outline of my thoughts: https://www.soundqubed.com/Tech-Tip-Clipping_b_16.html My thoughts were: 1) Set your head unit levels to flat or the max level you would want your sub to be at. 2) Either using familiar music or a test tone, find the level on the remote bass knob where the output volume is the same regardless if the knob is plugged in or not. 3) Once this level is found, set your gain to its lowest setting 4) Play a test tone and slowly increase your gain until the clipping indicator turns on or flickers at all 5) Theoretically, max gain should be set Thoughts?

I suppose it's better than nothing... but if you use test tones (and hearing protection) you can hear clipping. The tone shifts when clipping begins.Support the12volt.com

Agreed, this is how I set mine, but it's more of a curiosity thing. It would be kind of cool if someone who has a SMD DD could test it against their bass remote clipping indicator to see how they stack up.
