I've seen people mount their amps directly in front of their subs. I'm thinking that I'll need to mount one in front of four (KX800.2 in front of 12" solo-barics). Does anybody know what effect this will have on the amp? Will the extra vibration/SPL reduce the life of the amp?

definetly!!! vibrations are not particularly good for amps.

So I just talked to my local dealer, and he said that mounting the amp in front of the subs would be no problem. Now I'm really unsure about what to do. The 4 subs will have 2100 rms going to them, and for this reason I want to make sure that the amp will be fine mounted in front of them opposed to behind them.

In an ideal situation your amps would never be mounted to the sub enclosure or in an area where the woofers fire directly at them, as the vibrations (and especially flexing) can destroy the electrical connections inside the amp. On the other hand, this is often the most convenient location for mounting, and since speaker lead wires should be kept short it also makes sense. So there are special steps that can be taken to minimize the damage to the amp. Extra bracing either inside or on the outside of the sub enclosure where the amps will be mounted will help. If you are mounting the amps directly in line with the drivers, make sure they are bolted securely to a rigid surface that will not flex with the woofer's output.

So mounting directly to the chassis should be good enough, right? (the kicker amps have mounting clips, so there's no worry about noise)

Mounted to the chassis of the car? yes, I think that's about as rigid as you're likely to get! mounting amps -- posted image.

if you mount it on a hat and wear that hat it works good. i do that.
