I have a 2001 volvo S40 that i want to put a single din headunit into, but no one makes the adapter kit for it. How hard would it be to just use a single din pocket andput the mounting sleeve in the top part of the 2 din opening. I guess what im asking is if you can make your own single din adapter for a 2 din opening. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The problem would be supporting the deck on the bottom. There is a solution that will work, though: get the METRA 99-5512 DIN kitand the METRA 88-00-9000 Pocket Kit and it should suit your installation. GO HERE and enter your make.model/year.
