Hi. I'm pretty new to installing car audio, but I do know some of the basics. My problem is that my friends new cd player only works w/ the dome light of his car on. It's a 99 Ford Explorer btw. I did blow the fuse during the installation, but I replaced it. He says when he turns off the dome light, the sound get's staticy and the unit won't light up. Any help you can give me at this point would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is most likely not connected to either the correct power wire, ground wire or illumination wire.

i noticed two red wires w/ black stripes when doing the install. Do you think those 2 being crossed would do it?

Sounds as though you have hooked into the illumination wire. Check your wiring again. Does the cd retain it's memory for the clock and radio staions? If it does then you have the correct constant power lead (yellow wire on cd harness). The problem would more than likely be with the red ignition lead.

my friend just told me that he just noticed that the cd player only works right when the headlights are off. When they are turned on it goes bad again.

Im going to do everything in my power to fix the problem. I do have one more question though. Asuming all the wires are hooked up right...what else can be wrong w/ it? I did at one point during the install cut 2 or 3 wires at the same time..that's what caused the fuse to blow. Could that have caused all these major problems? Im going to his house tonight to try to correct the problem. Any further input yall can give me would be great.

Yes this may be a root cause of the problem, try running a new ground wire to bare metal somewhere as well.
