I am looking to get one of those aftermarket alertnators designed for car audio setups or any setup that stresses the car's electrical system. I am not sure where to get one or what kind to get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

As far as what size alternator you will need we need to know what you plan to power. Also what make and model is your car? I would suggest that you call around and get some prices from these guys,

My car is a 1999 Acura Integra gs coupe. I am running a JL Audio e2150 amp and I am about to upgrade to a mono sub amp that i am expecting to put out somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 rms.

If you upgrade to 1000 watts rms that will draw about 78 amps at max draw. I don’t know what your current alternator puts out, but I would get at least a 160-180+ amp alternator. But one thing to remember when getting a high output is you can never have too much power, so I would get the largest one you can.

I got one from AlterStart. They're in Texas, and I upgraded a 98 Civic from the stock 75 amp to 150. I found out about 'em thru eBay, and they seem pretty reputable. I just put it in yesterday, and my car hasn't blown up yet, oh and no more dimming lights (despite 2 one farad caps).

I mentioned to a mechanic at an auto shop that I was thinking about putting a high output alternator in my car, and he said not to do it unless it was absolutely necessary. He said it might screw up the electrical system. Anybody know what he's talking about?

You'll need to up the gauge on the wires to and fro on the alt.

As for doing harm...i doubt it. It'll help more than anything. also the power will be bumped up as well as having more at use.

I would find a new mechanic, your high out put will not harm your electrical system.

your new alt will only put out what the system needs. you need a new mechanic.
