DONT CUT THE WIRES.  Get the proper kit to adapt to the factory wiring harness and your job will be MUCH easier.  HERE's the Metra kit information - you want the one called  "into the car."  Go to any good car stereo shop and they will sell you the kit for less than $20, or buy it on line.

Your friend’s car has a class 2 databus system http://www.velocitymotorsport.com/install_notes/OBDII.htm you will need to use a relocation harness http://autosoundgear.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jopoenq8 if you want to replace the head unit.  What are you installing in the car?

bberman1 is correct you have a class II data system. Now you have two choices you can buy a data retention harness and relocate the factory radio in the trunk I believe the metra part # is 702003T or you can get a 702003 that you dont have to keep the radio inthe car. Now note you will lose your door chimes with either harness. You must  buy a speaker and use the expensive data harness to keep the chimes.
Now the important part. Gm has issued a warning on diconecting the radios in this car. They say that it can send a spike that can render your air bag useless. when you have finished installing the radio turn on the ignition. the air bag indicator should flash 7 times no more and no less. If it flashes 7 times you are good to go . if not the car shouls go to the dealer and the code blasted out...

I do not recommend that you try this install yourself due to the databus system and it's inherent problems, not that I want to discourage you from trying things yourself, in this case it is best left to the installers to work their magic. Here is another databus kit that includes the speaker, GM06, www.scosche.com + gm1583 install kit + mda1 antenna adaptor.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
