I have a 2001 taurus put in aftermarket deck. used metra kit 99-5716 and the adaptor harness 70-5716. The rear defrost will not work switch does light up nothin. Plug the factory deck in works fine. Anyone else run into this problem? Or know how to correct it?

That's the one with all the controlls built into the dash around the factory radio and the Metra kit replaces the whole pannel so you get the DIN spot.

The instructions are in the kit, there is more wiring that needs to be done other than just plug-n-play stereo adapter.

This sounds like Ford's way of discouraging aftermarket stereos.  I haven't done any installs on the current generation of Taurus, but the previous ones with the oval radios were a real pain.

I'm familiar with this install. You need to follow the kit's installation instructions if you've never done it before. It sounds to me like you just forgot some wiring.

It's definitely an effort by Ford to discourage aftermarket stereo installation. It's nowhere near as annoying as GM, though. Newer ('00+) GMs need to use a relocation harness to keep the factory deck installed. It's generally a $60 wiring harness, depending on where you buy it, and it requires you to find a good spot to conceal/secure the factory deck. All because it apparently controls the airbags or something stupid like that.

There is nothing on metra's little wiring instructions sheet. I have done a couple dozen taurus's and not had this problem and yes it is wired correctly. I even tried 2 other new kits to see if the switch was bad and its the same with the new kits. no defrost everything else perfect. I heard once its a ground thing with the switch that can cause this problem, but don't rember anything other then that.

Put the sucker back to stock and check again, and check the fuse again, an easy oversight for the most frusterated professional.

cut ground wire at the dwfrost switch and ground this to the radio ground this should fix it or plung the power side of the harness back in in the trunk this will fix too.

Your problem could be that you may have disconnected a wire or broke one off that is needed for the operation of your defroster.  Probably a ground.  The easiest way around this would to go to the defroster and ground from there or check with a multi-meter.

tom cat you should be right in the metra 70-5715 kit there is a peace of paper that discribes this problem and they say to cut the ground on the switch and ground it directly instead of into the harness. I will find out if this works tommarow the car is coming back will post the results.
