I bought and installed without listening to them ahead of time a pair of Kicker K5.2 comps in the front doors of my Volvo 940. I didn't like them from day 1. Too loud, too bright for my music tastes. They gotta go. My new choices are limited because of mounting depth. I am looking at the Kenwood Excelon 51XP 5.25 comps. The local car stereo shop has them but not on their sound board. I cannot test them. In an older car, I have a 4" pair of Kenwood comps in which I do like their sound. Anyone have any comments? Thoughts on other speakers I should consider? Limited to 2" mounting depth

Kenwoods have a nice high end, but not much below 150 Hz as the woofer is very flat.  Try a set of Blaupunkt TSc540 comps.  2.00" woofer mounting depth and pretty good lower end with a neutral midrange and decent tweeter.  Can be had for around $100 at Parts Express.

Its important that you audition the speakers you are purchasing. Go with CDT. They'll never let you down, best bang for the buck.

CDT is great.  But they won't fit into a 2" mounting depth...

I have read great reviews about the CDTs, but you are correct the mounting depth is more than I can handle. I don't have any option of building out from the door either at the clearance from door to side of my dash is minimal. The 940 series Volvos were not built with great acoustics in mind. Hadn't even thought of the Blaupunkt's. Very hard to get a demo of anything around my town.
