JL has a box on there website http://www.jlaudio.com/enclosures/HObp112W3v2.html  But it says bandpass but it also talks about being ported on the left panel of the screen       "JL Audio’s patent-pending, chamber-coupled port design provides maximum surface area (and greatly reduced port noise) by cleverly wrapping the dual ports around the perimeter of the enclosure."  So is this box a bandpass or a ported or both, can anyone explain this too me...

looks like a crappy band-pass to me. i hate those things they block sound and give a punchy bass to ur ride. no being it is JL it may be more effective in it's delivery of clean precise bass. look around for a local dealer that might have it and peep it out. post whatever u find als.

It looks like the ports are on the side all the way in the back. Slotted from top to bottom. Does anyone else see it this way?

i have seen this box, and the ported version in person. Its not that hard to understand, but kinda hard to explain. The box you have the link for, has the subvoofer mounted, with a gap and the plexi mounted in front (like a bandpass box), but the ports are in the back of the box, and come around the sides, which is why the sub and the plexi panel are recessed. its like 2 boxes in one. That big oval in front, is the port. clever  aint it??

Here is what tech support from JL Audio had to say about the box,

Hello Joe, It is indeed a bandpass enclosure. The only difference is that the energy coming from the ports is directed (channeled) through a second opening which allows for more performance.
