I attempted to install an Alpine CDA-7897 in my 02 Tahoe using the recommended Metra Harness.  It worked for about 5 seconds and then completely lost power.  Just wanting to see the deck operate, I only had the Power, Ingition, and Ground wires connected (harness to harness)

A local installer told me that the tahoe factory deck runs on 5v and when I plugged in the 12v alpine, the capicators filled, and then blew a module in the trucks computer.  He says a factory deck will never work in the truck again (unless I get the computer replaced) and to get the Alpine to work I need to run the Ingition wire to the pink wire in the bundle under the steering column.

Does this sound right???

What the %$#@ is he talking about. Thats one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Don't listen to anything that installer says. Check your wiring connections again with a meter. You should find that the orange wire has 12 volt+ battery power. The green or yellow wire next to it is the switched ignition wire. The black wire in the harness is the ground. You probably blew a fuse in the vehicle. It is safer to hook up all the wires first or tape them up to eliminate potential shorts.

Thanks for the reply - I was hoping that was the case.

Me and a buddy ripped it all apart again yesterday and sure enough - we found a blown fuse.  Replace the bad one, and I'm jamming again - with either head unit.

Thanks again.
