ok i have a 91' cavalier that has stock 3.5 speaker up in the dash (obviously) and the position and sound of them is awesome.

but say i bought a new car that didnt have 3.5 stock in the dash, but 6.5's in the doors instead and i wanted to make fiberglass kick pods....would there be a great advantage of sound diff from the pods than the doors. i know the 6.5 in the doors are just facing forwards towards your legs/knees but the same could be said about the kickpods. that is why 3.5 dash speakers have the advantage of sound! :P

NOT NECESSARILY, WHEN STAGING AND IMAGING A VEHICLE YOU WANT THE COMPONENT SPEAKERS TO BE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE SAME DISTANCE FROM EACH SIDE OF THE CAR TO YOUR EARS. WHEN DOING KICK PANELS THERE IS ONLY A FEW INCHES DIFFERENCE WHERE AS IF YOU MEASURE DRIVERS SIDE DASH AND PASSENGER SIDE DASH THE DISTANCE IS ALMOST DOUBLED, SAME GOES FOR DOOR LOCATIONS. MOST SQ CARS HAVE KICK PANELS BECAUSE THEY OFFER THE MOST NATURAL IMAGING, WHICH IS THEN TWEAKED WITH CROSSOVERS, EQ'S, ETC...

what!?!?! you want some??

Ok, first off the same cant be said for kick pods if they are made properly. Even though the sound starts at the floor the sound is still DIRECTED at you if they are pointed properly, thats the point of making them in the first place. In factory door locations the sound starts low and stays low. On top of that, a 6 1/2 in a pod is gonna have huge advantages in the midbass area over the 3 1/2. As fas as Im concerened a 3.5 speaker is a glorified tweeter with a limited range of play. I use them as fridge magnets and paper weights.

I thought I should add a few things for you to consider:

1. 95% of your imaging and soundstage comes from your frequency response (including height).

2. The pathlength differences between the left side and the right side comparing kick pannel placement and lower door placement is extremely small. Considering that you have to sacrifice low end response of your mids (enclosure size much smaller) for kick pannel mounting, I don't think it is worth it.

3. Frequencies above 1000 Hz get their imaging cues specifically from volume differences.

4. Frequencies below 500 Hz get their imaging cues specifically from timing differences.

5. The frequencies between the above get their cues from both.
