is it bad for the amp to have the gain all the way up and just mess with the volume on the deck to change it untill it sounds bad

Wow.  That is a very bad thing to do.  Yes, it can harm your amps, but it's more likely to destroy your speakers first.  Don't do this.  Set the gain correctly.  It is not a volume control.  Look at the current thread about setting up amplifiers.
