I'm trying to replace the factory 6X9 JLs in my 2000 Grand Am. The rear speakers are really strange and have two sets of wires, it's almost as 1 set is for the lows and the other is for the highs. I thought originally there was one wire per harness, but there seems to be 4 wires going into the speaker. Does anyone know why there are two sets of wires and how to properly wire my new speakers with the old harnesses.

trace the wires back and use the wire that lead to L sp yellow and brown and R sp Dk blue and lt blue. the dark wires are postive

i'm pretty sure you just gave him chevy factory wire colors not pontiac

yes there would be 4 wires going to each speaker as these are amplified, woofer and tweeter separately.....

Kevin is right. In most stock stereo systems with a higher quality speakers, such as in your case or in bose systems, they have external amps. You need to trace the wires and disgaurd and possibly remove the amp unless you still want to use them. If you have a good enough head unit, more than likely the amps will just be over kill and mite raise your chance for overloading the speakers.

Would a new head unit even work with the stock amp? Wouldn't the amp have to be removed to use a new headunit?

yes you can use/integrate the factory amp if you want to.... just like the Fords
