I bought a Rockford Fosgate 851S amp recently and noticed that there were no fuses built into this monster.  What does that mean and shouldn't I install a fuse in the line right next to the amp?  How do these amps compare to the rest?

Also, I have heard that you can tell how well an amp is built by the total fuse rating of the built in fuses.  I also have a Sony XM-DS1600P5 which puts out 900 watts bridged and has 3 40amp built in fuses.  How does this amp compare also?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

As for the fuses in the amps, have no idea why Fosgate put out a design of this nature, kind of puzzling, but yes to be on the safe side(better safe than sorry), I put fuse hoders on both ends, your standard on the battery, and one by the amp, just to protect if something happens on the amp end. If it does and you don't have a fuse on amp end, you might need to install a fire extinguisher.

not quite sure but it might have internal fuses, aka you have to send it in for even basic maintence but not really sure i havent opened one up I have just made sure i have recomened a fused distribution block before them

Does this apply to all the RF amps?  I'm planning on getting either the new PunchP500 or last year's Power 551s.  Are these also fuseless?

RF's externally fused. No they dont have internal fuses. They just have a smart circuity board to just go into protection the second anything starts to go wrong. I had a 700S for 2 years or so. Blew it 2 times, but had warranty. I blew it... on purpose kinda. I had a 150 amp fuse inline, and tried bridging it down to one ohm. lol. It was intentional. Anyhow, even with all the repairs, that puppy slams as good as it did when i bought it.

by the way, dont put Sony and RF in the same sentence. I know RF's stuff isnt up to par with their older equipment, but to compare it to sony is like comparing a Mercedes Benz to a Ford. IMO.
