I have a problem my car has been sitting for a long time without being driven and something is wrong with either the alt or battery. What happens is i can jump or charge the battery and it will start up it will run just fine. As soon as i shut off the engine if i try to start it again the battery is dead again. Would this be due to a bad battery or is it posible my alternater is bad. I had it on today and shut it off for like 10 seconds and the battery was already dead. If anyone know what will fix this problem let me know thanks

It might be that your battery has been ruined if its been totally discharged too much.

ok so this wouldn't have anything to do with my alternator correct? i dont think it would because it runs fine after the car starts

Right. It's the battery. The car is running off the alternator while the engine is running. But the battery can't produce enough amperage to start the car.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

thanks alot ill go ahead and change the battery one more thing i do have a pretty powerful system with 2 amps runnin should i get a more powerful battery or will a regular one from an autoparts store work. I do plan on upgrading the alternator soon

oh and my car doesnt have a tag on it so i cant drive it yet however i turn it on very often almost every day to try and keep the engine working properly if the car is just on and not moving the alternater should still charge the battery is that correct?

I think you need a new battery since the current one has been discharged too often and can't hold a charge any longer.

The alt charges the battery whether the car is in motion or sitting still. Get one of those big fancy Interstate batteries. But seriously, the battery only has to start the car and hold the rated amperage. The alternator produces amperage and sends it through the battery to equipment like air conditioners and amplifiers that demand it. Get a new battery that is listed for that particular car.

As far as your question about getting a new batt or alternater due to your system being big, that would depend on your amps and the amperage of your alternator. As far as your alternator charging your battery when its at idle, it does, but not a lot. Your rpm's need to be at roughly 2500-3000 for your alternator to charge your battery at a decent rate. Just for future referance if you have any Les Schwabs around your area you can take your car into them and they will check your battery for you. Im sure most other places that have the equipment at there disposal would as well. Another thing you might do before buying a new battery is open up the battery and check the fluid in it. If you havnt messed with batteries before you might want to have someone else check it out for you. From what I know about batteries, if you dont have adeqeute fluid (water) in the battery it will not hold a charge. Just a few options to take a look at.
