Installation Kit Manufacturers?

Can someone give me a list of the major manufacturer's of car stereo installation kits. I've got a 1990 Ford Probe and I'm exploring some options on installing my stereo. For those interested here's a post from Probetalk that details what's going on.

got my new Pioneer 7600MP last week and installed it right away. It came with the free install kit but it looked really flimsy and I didn't wanna lose the cubby hole beneath it. Therefore, I just removed everything, installed two screws on either side of the stereo into the factory brackets, bent the rear support that screws into the back of the stereo and screwed that on, and then put everything back together, no install kit needed.

My problem is this, there is a half inch gap all around the stereo using the trim ring that was already in there. (previous owner had an aftermarket stereo in there already). The trim ring that came with the stereo won't fit properly either, so there's no way to fill it. I thought about going to best buy and checking out some kits made my different manufacturers (Metra and Scosche; are there others?) to see if there is a different style.
What I'd like to do is to use the trim ring with an aftermarket install kit and the bezel that came with the stereo. That way I could still have a semi-stock look without the gap.
Would you guys mind posting some pics of what you've done with your install, including anything original? I'd like to get some ideas. I've been through cardomain and perfomance probe galleries but its kinda hit or miss.

I've done lots of first generation Probes.  Great cars.  Use the Metra dash kit, it's the best and fits perfectly.  But your new head unit will stick out a lot farther than stock, as the car simply was not designed for replacing the stereo.  Be sure to bypass the factory amp under the passenger seat if it has the "premium" audio system.  Does it have the 6" factory sub in the rear?

They are great cars. I wasn't really familiar with them till I picked one up used for a great price. Very happy with it.

I'll check out the Metra kit and see if there isn't some way I can modify it to mount flush. I just think its really tacky looking when it sticks out so far. I think the tabs on top of the map pocket might be keeping it from coming back farther - Time for the trusty Dremel!

For right now I bought a bypass harness to bypass the factory amp, but in the next couple weeks or so I'm going to be running new speaker wire. The back will be easy but from what I've read on other forums the front wires should be fun lol

I don't have the factory sub but I thought about adding an aftermarket sub to fit there if I can find one that will fit. I'm not really into bass pumpin and all that - just want a good sounding system and I think that will help fill out the spectrum. I think they might be square speakers though. Not sure if I'll be able to find something that'll fit.

The factory sub is a 6" normal round speaker in a custom plastic enclosure.  If you want to install a small sub in the factory location, find a wrecked Probe that has the factory sub and take out the enclosure.  Mount a new 6" or 6.5" subwoofer in it (there are several decent choices) and a good aftermarket mono amp.  If what you're looking for is low frequency reinforcement but you don't need to 'thump," then this can be a very good solution.

Getting to the rear speakers is a pain, since it requires removal of all the rear plastic trim.  I suggest removing the seats when you go for it, just to give yourself some room to work.  Running new speaker wires is a piece of cake, actually.

I had read in other forums that its a pain to get through the rubber hoses connecting the door with the body - well - not so much the hose as finding out where it comes out under the dash. I suppose that's just something I'll have to figure out when it comes to it.

Thanks for the tip on the sub enclosure and everything else. I'm looking forward to this project and you've really helped out!

Mark
