my neighbor has an old orion sub he asked me to hook it up to my amp and see if it works. When i hooked it up it would play but as soon as the bass was about to hit it would turn off and turn on soon as the part with bass was over. Does this mean that the subwoofer is blown? anyway my neighbor said since it wouldnt work i could keep it and i would like to get it to work any help is appreciated thanks

Sounds like the voice coil is shorted out or otherwise blown.  You can test it with an ohm meter and see what the voice coil resistance is.  Does the speaker cone move by hand?  You could get the speaker re-coned, but depending on which one it is it could cost as much as a new one.

The tinsel leads on the speaker could also be bad, these can sometimes be repaired although never to original strength.

Sounds like a seperated voice coil to me. Not worth fixing in my opinion so your neighbor is now the proud owner of a new Orion Fruit Basket. I have a 15 inch JL fruit basket on my table right now.

If it works but cuts off only when the bass hits, it looks like the amp is sensing too much load and cutting off during the bass. Are you sure the sub's impedance matches the amp's?
