Crazy Idea: LOC to Bass Amp

Alright, So I'm 17 with a 1993 Nissan Altima, a 400 watt bass head, a 2x10" and 1x15" cabinet that fit in my trunk. They're both 8 ohms and I usually run them in parallel to get a 4 ohm load. This past friday, I disconnected the rear speakers, after checking them out to ensure I wouldn't blow my reciever and attached them to the bass cabs. It sounded pretty cool, but I couldn't get that loud as I've got a Blaupunkt A9000 in there, which does 20 watts a channel - these cabs do 300 watts. So after doing some research I've discovered I could use a Line Out Convertor to take the power going to the rear speakers into RCA. I then plan to mount in my bass head, powered through the cigarette lighter, take the RCA into the head through the preamp in jack and power my bass cabs. I've done this through my home stereo and it really rocks. The only problems I can forsee is power going to the head, and the fact that it'll be mono but otherwise as far as I know it should fly. The question is - will this work?

hmm - where would you suggest tapping power from then?

Directly from the battery, with the correct gauge cable. What is a bass head? a pre-loaded sub/amp combo or just an amp or is it a home sub?

It's bassically (haha) a bass guitar amp head. It has a preamp section - which is bypassable- and a poweramp section.

If it runs off house power you will need a fairly large power invertor (if you are running two and they are 300 watts rms then you will need at least a 600 watt continuous power invertor and 4 gauge power cable directly to the battery). If you are only running one 300 watt RMS bass head then you will need a 300 watt continuous power invertor and 8 gauge power cable. You will also need some 8 gauge cable for the ground so you can ground your invertor to the chassis. In the end it wil probobly be alot more expensive then just buying a car amp and subs.

I'm going to give it a shot this weekend using the 15" cab with a 60 watt amp I have lying around, I've seen a power invertor running in Canadian tire that says it will work with a 13" TV, Which should be enough for an amp of that size. I'll see how it goes and report back here.

Wow - I bought a 400 watt Elimintator Power Invertor from Canadian Tire - $49.99 Canadian Dollars. I then plugged it into the cigarette lighter, and setup my LOC through my rear speakers. I ran the Right and Left RCA cables from the LOC into an adaptor that takes the two into a 1/4" cable. I plugged all that into the 60 watt amp head I had lying around and plugged the amp into my 300 watt 15" cab. This thing is insane. It's so loud and bassy - and it sounds decent too. I can't wait to try it out with both cabs and the 400watt head to see what thats like. I took her down the main street in my town and I was getting huge looks from people walking down the street. I left the car on and walked approx 30 feet away and could still hear Thriller playing in my car. I'll post pics later.
