Hey all, im about to build a box for my sub, once i get the specs down. Im going to build a ported box, my first one, and I have a few questions before i start making it. Now, i know when you are making a port, the port itself takes up volume, so you have to have to make the box bigger to compensate for it. Does shape of the port matter? Im going to go with slot/square type, but does it make a difference if its rectangular versus square? will it produce a different sound? Also, i've heard things about tapering edges, or something has an effect on the sound, or something. any info for me from u ported box pros? thanks alot.

Yes, the slot shape can change the sound of the system.  Rectangular slots tend to sound better than square ports.  Round ports sound the best, but it can be difficult to make them large enough, which is why slots have become so popular.  Taper or round off the opening of the slot where it exits the enclosure to help minimize port noise.  Make sure the slot is on the same baffle board (side) as the woofer for best results.  I often find that I have to modify the port numerous times in a given enclosure to get the sound just right, but it all depends on how critical your ear (or testing equipment) is.
