Using car audio for home theatre

I have a 200W RCA 8" home subwoofer, the sub is fried but the amp and enclosure are fine.  In fact, when it worked-this thing pounded, so I want to keep it.  Can I replace the RCA woofer w/ an aftermarket car audio sub?  I realize it would have to be capable of running at 8 ohms(I think all home audio is 8 ohms).  I was thinking of buying a 4 ohm, DVC sub and wiring it to an 8 ohm load.  I'm thinking of using a mid-quality SPL sub, something like Audiobahn or Power Accoustic.  What do the experts think?  All input greatly appreciated!                           -------Alex 

Regardless of the driver you use, whether it be home audio or car audio, be sure to check the enclosure you have.  For example, certain drivers do better in ported/sealed/bandpass.

Check the volume of the enclosure as good as you can, as well as the port size/length to help you determine the correct driver to replace the old one with.

Evanc is very correct.  www.madisound.com also has excellent drivers for home use. 

Indeed!  My home theatre sub is driven by a Phase Linear mono amp designed, built and signed by Bob back in 1977 and still pumping better than anything else I've ever heard.  I also use a Sunfire Ultimate reveiver.  If you can find pre-KLH Carver car audio gear it is worth whatever you have to pay for it, especially their magnetic field power amplifiers.

Sunfire equipment is awesome, epspecially their subs.
