Is having two separate amps, 1 for the components and one for the sub a better way to go than to get an amp that has 5 channels all in one? Looking for opinions and expert advise before buying my next amp.

If the 5 channel amp power the speakers properly then it would be my choice to use it first. It takes up less real estate in the car, costs less to wire and does the same job as two amplifiers. Some 5 channel amps are nothing more than two amps under the same heatsink. In some cases the 5 channel amp will not suit the needs of the system making two amplifiers a necessity. It is all about the needs of the system first, the rest is up to you.

Thanks for the info. Since I have more flexibility with 2 amps Im goign to go with separate. And about real estate, my most recent sub box really ate up all the land and airspace as well. I had no choice but to sacrifice for my ears.

I would trade my two amps in on a Memphis Belle in a heartbeat.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
