I just bought a 92 Ford Explorer XLT, and am trying to install cd reciever/head unit. I have the power/ground wires hooked up, and the unit will turn on, but I can't get the speakers to work. I looked at the wire codes in the database on this site, but the wire colors in my truck are different. Here's what I've got:

WHITE/ Orange - WHITE/ Red - Lt Blue/Black - Violet/White - Brown - Yellow - Lt Blue - Lt Green

There's also a silver wire with no insulation on it

I don't know which is which. Any help?

are they thin like 26 gauge wire? it most likely has the premium sound. did you cut the plug off? if therest of that wire is sheathed in a gray cable, then it is premium sound. either rewire to each speaker or easier (but longer wire route) to the factory amp just in front of the passenger side rear rearwell. pull the whole panel off and you'll see it. all the speaker wires are right there.

I would go ahead and re-wire the whole vehicle with good wire. You will get a better sound. You're going to have to make speaker wire runs any way. Why not do it the right way?

yeah, those aren't the same colors -

it had the upgrade sound system; the speaker wires are sheathed in gray plastic

i just want to connect the speaker wires from the truck to those of the head unit, but i don't know what's what. i tried connecting the positive right front speaker wire from the head unit to one of the ones from the truck and then touching the negative to the other wires in turn, to see if i could get any sound, but no dice. don't know what to do.

yupperz, , its easier to re wire those ford exploders, than it is to intigrate it into the factory set up. Spend $20 on wire and 2 hours labour and you will have some good sound.

I always just use the adapter plug but if the plug is already cut off the shielded cable than I would have to agree with everyone else and just run new wire.

What head unit are you installing? I know this is a longshot, but I'm using the Alpine 9815, and it has an option to turn off the internal amplifier in the setup menu. If that is set to off, the radio will power, but you'll never hear a sound out of your speakers.

If you go to a local car audio shop they should have a amp bypass harness for you vehicle. If you pull off the back passanger panel, you will see the amp. you should see two plugs on it. Those are the speakers from the head unit going into the amp, and wires coming from the amp to the speakers. the bypass plug takes care of all this for you.
