I need to replace a blown speaker on the drivers front door. The midrange driver is completely inoperative, the tweeter still plays fine. I was figuring on upgrading while I was at it. This brings up a few questions. First, is there a factory amp somewhere in the truck, or is it powering the six speakers from the head unit? Second, what is the wattage at each speaker? Third, do the speakers use passive crossovers (capacitors) at each speaker and have a full range signal coming in, or is the crossover built into the head unit/amp?

unless it's the Bose option it'll just be deck to speakers...we replace a lot of those speakers under warranty for GM. They are just a full range single cone 6" speaker... no separate x-over ( tweeter is capped ) roughly 30 watts...

Thanks for the super fast reply!
Do you happen to know what size tweeter the OEM is? I'm thinking of maybe throwing some MB Quart 6.5" components in the doors. The MB Quart use a 1" tweeter, so I'm curious as to whether that would fit in the stock location?

The factory tweeter looks like a .5" tweeter at most (I removed both from the front doors of a 98 suburban and put in some Boston FS60 component speakers), and I doubt that GM has changed their tweeter size over the years. I'm not sure if it would fit in your silverado factory location, and if the tweeter hole is big enough you would still have to fabricate a custom bracket to mount them on probobly.

I'm not worried about a little custom fabrication. I'll have to have a look at the clearance between the door and the door panel. Maybe I can surface mount the Quart tweeter over the .5" factory hole, just using the factory hole to drop the wire through, and still have the door panel fit. I just don't want to have to cut the door panel at all. I want the truck to retain a factory appearance.

I use MB Quart speakers all the time in these vehicles. The woofer fits like a glove and the tweeter fits with a little effort and ingenuity. No modifications to the vehicle.

if i were gonna do an upgrade i would start with a good head unit,if you put in new speakers and amp and all that good stuff,a factory head still isn't as good as say a kenwood.so if you take all the good stuff and the head is crap,no matter how much you put into it it,it still sounds like crap.get a kick azz head unit and go from there.good luck.
if i can't make it sound good, then it is just a piece of crap anyway

stereofreak, I agree with you 110%.
If it were mine, I'd scrap all the factory stuff and go nuts on it. But... this truck belongs to my mother. She's totally content with the factory system. I was just gonna' bump it up a notch while I was in there.
