Midrange Driver Opinions / Suggestions

Alright.  I won't be able to fit a large driver into the kicks.  4.5" or smaller would be perfect.  I am looking to spend under $300 for a pair.

Here are some options I'm considering:

I have no way to confirm the quality or listen to any of these speakers at local dealers.  Anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions? How would 4ohm home drivers from companies like vifa, seas, scan-speak, etc. match up?  Some of the Vifa drivers seem to have pretty flat responses at a low cost.

Adding 4.5" mids to a component system with a 6.5" woofer seems like it would be overly complicated and not needed (the 6.5" woofers you already have can play alot lower then a 4.5" mid would, so how are you going to get the 6.5 woofer to not play the frequencys that the 4.5" mid would be playing?) Someone pleaseee correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not dumb - I won't be playing the same frequencies on both drivers.  They will all be properly crossed over.  

I am interested in doing this for multiple reasons:   First, because the 6.5" quart sounds strained at the high end of the midrange.  I think 2500hz is slightly too high for the 6.5" quart driver.  Additionally, I feel like I can fix some of the imaging problems with kicks that my door midrange creates now.  Finally, the Eclipse provides 5 quasi-parametric settings for the mids, and 5 for the highs.  The quart tweeter's frequency response is flat.  I don't need the 5 parametric settings on it.  The quart 6.5" has a much sloppier response than I'd like it to have.  By narrowing the frequency range it needs to play I will be able to clean it up better with the eq. 

It will be quite easy to get the 6.5" to not play the frequencies the 4" will play.  That isn't an issue.

Why am I doing this?  Because I want better sound.  If you can think of a better route short of replacing my current speakers, by all means, let me know.

You've given me my perfect low cost alternative.  Now, if you had to choose ideal speaker for this application, what would you pick?

Wow, that's really hard to say.  I'd have to audition several before I could choose, as the mid to upper mids are where a LOT of musical information lives and the sound ot the midrange will largely determine the overall "feeling" of the sound in the application.  If I HAD to use 4.5" speakers, I'd probably start with the Scan Speak 12M series, as I already use Scan Speak for my mid-bass.  If it didn't sound right (or if it was too expensive) I'd try out raw driver offerings from Vifa, Audax, Morel, Davis, Dynaudio, and JBL.  If I didn't find any I really liked, I'd try out 4" or 4.5" component mids from Focal, Memphis, MB Quart, Infinity, Boston...  But then again I am very picky!
