Hi all.....I know enough to be dangerous at times...heh heh, but I've got a question that may sound stupid to most all of you, but, well.....I still have to ask.

My car has a flat compartment in the back hatch area where the spare tire is stored.....there is enough room to put a 12" sub right in the middle of the "lid" and still maintain having a spare tire. My question is.....can I mount the sub (will more than likely be a Boston Pro) under this lid without cutting a hole in it? If not, what grill and (if there is such a thing) acoustical carpet can I use without the risk of puncturing it with something that would lie over top of it?

I like subtle...ALOT - and don't want anything seen.

Thanks much in advance.

You can build a false floor. Keep the original in tact. Can you take out the floor piece that is in there now? If so, you can trace that onto a template, and build any cover you want for the subwoofer. And you can still make it 'hinged' to access that tire and sub.
Hope this helps,

That is not a stupid question, just a tough one.  The enclosure for the sub will have to be airtight and ultra rigid, and the speaker will have to fire into the hatch area through a hole.  If you want to use the spare tire well, and keep the tire in it too, then you may have to do some fancy construction with fiberglass.  And raise the level of the existing floor to accomodate the sub and give it the proper amount of air space.  As for the stealth aspect, it would be difficult to find something that can't be punctured but that sound will transparentlly flow through.  You might just consider a regular speaker grill, but have a flat hard cover to slide over it when you are parked.  Check in with the fiberglass and interiors forum here for possible info on fitting into a spare tire well.

dxav- just saw your post after I put this up.  I was thinking along the same lines as you but you said it better  :)

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

The area is hinged - I should have been more specific.....its a wagon and this particular compartment can either be storage or house a 3rd seat, so its got about 6" of room before a carpet divider that covers the tire. If I were to get creative with a tire cover (shell?) I could easily have 6-8" of depth to play with (thats what she said.....uh, sorry....never mind). mount sub under lid without cutting a hole? -- posted image.

ANYWAYS, the factory cover to this is actually made out of plywood and has a 2-part hinge (kind of folds over)....I am going to remove the middle hinge, making it solid with perhaps a set of trunk struts or maybe a prop-rod, etc. when it opens. My understanding has always been that bass is meant to be felt not heard (?!) so my real concern was if the sub would even function in a TOTALLY sealed area....or would it be better to just cut it out like a normal speaker install (maybe recessing it under the surface a tad) and installing a metal grill (do they even sell anything that is that sturdy?).  If so, I'd even totally cover it with carpet.  Its black carpet to begin with so shouldn't be rocket science to conceal alot.

Thanks again guys mount sub under lid without cutting a hole? -- posted image.

When i saw the space in the wheel well for the spare tire I had the same idea, of hiding a sub inside there. After a tug-of-war between my heart and brain, I ended up puttingn a real sub box. If you succeed in doing that, please post pictures so we all can see. That would be really interesting. I gave up on the idea too soon as I don't know how to work with fiberglass nor know anyone who can help me with it.   About putting carpet over the speaker, it may not allow the sounds go pass through but I am sure you know what you are doing.

Sorry, you can NOT post a reply.
