I need some names of really good head units I am kinda new to car audio. The head unit has to have a built in cd player..

wow you are new,just about all heads have built in cd players.myself i like kenwood,alpine and the eclipse lines.i am a more technical person and i like it complicated.panasonic makes a good head to,just depends on what you wanna do.is it just a regular everyday kinda car or do you wanna compete,what about one that plays mp3's and a satellite compatible is good to.and how much do you wanna spend?

if i can't make it sound good,then it is just a piece of crap anyway

No more than $400 to spend. I do not compete just looking for advice on a good head unit.

I would look at Eclipse and Nakamichi

I agree. Eclipse and Nakamichi make exceptional receivers. Incredible sound.

Alpine....

the others mentioned are excellent too. some Clarions are very nice too. If you are spending the money, you might as well get something nice.

If you want some money left over, Pioneer makes some decent Cd players for under $200, look for the part numbers like DEH-###

for those other brands, you need to spend at least $400 to get something worthwhile. Although I've dealt with Alpines costing around $250-$300 and they are never a disapointment.

I agree - the spendier Alpines are always good (though not the abolute best). If you go with them, spend at least $300 - $400 to get the quality units.

If you want some real quality, go with Eclipse, Nakamichi, or as I've heard some of the "experts" on here say - Grundig. I've never heard a Grundig, but I hear only the best things about them. IMO the order they go in is Nak, Eclipse, then Alpine (don't know where Grundig sits as I've never heard one).

I would stay away from the more "mainstream" brands such as Pioneer, Panasonic, JVC, Kenwood, and especially, especially Sony. I hear more bad things than good about them. The only brand I have ever spent my money on is Alpine (several times). My next will be an Eclipse, though.

just to add to the eclipse praise, i am in the works of purchasing their top of the line unit, as others have said, i've heard alot of good things about this deck, and will pay for it too. this is well over your budget and im sure you could definitely settle for one of their lower models.

i have a sony mp40 at the moment, and although its my first deck, and people arent too fond of them, i have to say at least its still running :-)...

the EQ doesnt impress me a whole lot, i see myself fiddling with it alot more now, it reads MP discs quite slowly, and sometimes on well burned cd's it'll burp as i call it, in the song, taking the cd out and going back to that song sometimes remedy's the burp, but i believe its a heat issue. they dont get the cd's as toasty as other decks i've experianced in the past, so i dont know if they just dont like hot cd's or what. but hope this info helps you to say away from sony :-).

Eclipse CD3434 or CD5444 should both be in your price range. They are not available on line in Canada or the US. Find yourself a retailer who deals with this great line and enjoy good sound from an easy to use cd player.

Eclipse and Nakamichi (+ Denon and Grundig) do not build their equipment to hit a price point, they are built to sound good first, then give the user what they need to operate a respectable sound system.
