does the depth of the enclosure affect the subs performance?

Not as long as the subs still have room to breathe behind the pole piece. Most subs use a vented pole piece to push and pull air into the inner workings of the speaker to help it cool. It is a good idea to leave about 2 inches of space behind the magnet to the back of the box. What is important is this, the box can be any shape you want, as long as the volume is correct for the sub.Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
