i want to build my own box for my subs but am a little lost.

i got these instructions for this website http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-mg1BNEjmS8t/reviews/20030701/build_box.html?page=2

my main question is if the way to calculate the air space is correct? the dimensions for my subs spec sheet is in feet and the website tells me how to convert inches to feet but i want to know if that is the correct way. any ideas?

That's a decent tutorial.  Be sure to read the next two sections as well.  Perhaps the best tutorial web site is www.diysubwoofers.org, although some of the information there may be a bit over the ehad of a beginner.
