what is best for your subs when in the box to create more bass more space or less, like if a sub is rated for 1 to .5 for volume which is best. the lower or higher #

If you are speaking of sealed box volumes, using a valued at the upper end of the range will result in the sub being able to play lower frequencies better, however there is a small loss of power handling because the cone moves easier in a larger enclosure and thus can bottom on easier as well. However, usually if you are working within the manufacturers given range, there isnt usually a noticable difference as far as the power rating goes. Using a box with a smaller volume will reduce the ability for the speaker to play the lower frequencies, but should gain some power handling ability. Same thing goes as far as how the power handling range is effected within the given range. Most installers I have talked with about this in the past, usually use a volume slightly above the average of the range. (ie. Range of 0.5 - 1.0 cu ft .85 cu ft would be used)
