question for you box builders

a 7 cubic foot box!?!   for two 12"'s?!?!       I got a good idea to make it sound better, saw it in half.   I cant think of any subs that sound good in 3.5 cu/ft. 

Forget about the ports.... if you want it to sound good, seal it.

I thought correctly ported boxes are suppose to sound better ?

Beyma Guy, the down firing ports, are they flush against the floor or are they elevated like 2 or 3 inches ?

It depends on your definition of 'sound better' and what application your subwoofer was designed for.  If greater output for the same amount of power is important to you and you have the space then a ported box can sound very good if properly constructed. 

Sealed boxes require smaller enclosures and usually produce better transient response.  "They are usually the subwoofer system of choice for audiophiles because of their excellent transient response (i.e. no boomy sound) characteristics when designed and built properly."  diysubwoofers.org

Caps alert.  Who knows if changing the port direction would help.  What sounds good in one car may not work in another.  The only way to know is to try it out.  Sorry I can't help more, but the characteristics of the car really determine how the bass waves are going to interact with the environment. 

clif design...that a shop...i saw a car that had a ton of clif design stuff on it.

try rotating the box around and see what you like.

If the ported box is built right, and tuned that low..its gonna be big...what you running?

well it's great that you have a 'Clif Designed' box and everything..... but a box alone means nothing. if it's designed for an explorer, it might sound like crap in a civic.  That's why pre-fabs are a joke. Clif Designs is a prefab maker.

Alot more comes into play in box building than one really expensive box. Theres the dimensions/dynamics of a vehicle, interior plastic grades, etc.   The only way to make something sound good is to play with it, try doing your port idea, if it doesn't work, just put it back and fill the hole.

Have fun..... the term "if it ain't broke....." doesn't apply in car audio..... theres always something to play with for perfection.
