Why the different sizes in subs and what’s the pros and cons of the smaller subs (10" 13" etc..) vs. the big boys (15").

I'm looking at subs and trying to decide on either a 10" or a 12." I mostly listed rock (both old and new… a little of the eagles, the who... and maybe some creed, godsmack, switchfoot, poparoach, etc.)

I am mainly looking at JL subs with a JL amp. I'm not into shacking the earth or anything... so I was thinking that around ~200 - 300 watts should be plenty. My car is a 2000 Chevy Malibu... 4x6" speakers up front, 6x9's in the back. So, I need something that'll get me those lower frequencies that stay inside my car.

I like tens, they just seem to sound cleaner, although nothing is wrong witha good ole 12".

Since you listen to alot of rock and your not looking for alot of bass. I recommend going with 2 10"s or 3 10"s.

I'd stick with 2. I had 3 10's and 3 is going to be loud as sin. And since your looking for in-car-quality over waking the neightbors I'd say 2 10's would be plenty or event just a single 12. Something like a pair of JL 10w3v2's or a 12w3v2 off a 500/1 would probably be perfect for you.

If you are just looking to get some low bass I think a single 10" sub is sufficient. A 12" will play a bit deeper but some people feel the transient response is better on 10" subs. Increased quickness is nice for rock. Some subwoofers, and this seems more common of larger subs, can have a hard time keeping up with some fast kick drums. A single quality sub is enough to add to the bottom end if you do not want to take up too much trunk space. Your hunch is also right, 200-300 watts IS plenty.

A single JL with a JL amp (both quality products) will add quite a bit to your system.

^^^^^^ took the words right off of my keyboard. Don't just limit youself automatically to one brand either. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I experimented with a MB Quart 10" sub at the request of a customer. He wanted it and I could not talk him out of it. Let's just say that it now has become a design of reference for us in the last year that we have duplicated many times over. I would never have discovered this had it not been for the customer insistance. There are lots of good subs on the market today that will give stellar results with the amount of power that you are planning on running.
