ok, so i need some help deciding on an amp. i'm planning on redoing my entire system. thinking mb quart all the way around the inside. and i'm using 2 12 inch infinty i took outta my old car. i talked to a guy at a custom shop where i live and he said either go with eclipse, directed, or kicker.  he was talking about getting a 5 channel and running that for all my speakers. he suggested the kicker 700.5. i was thinking about this one but just want to get a feeling of what you all think or use? i was also contemplating alpine, maybe jl, maybe usamps. any suggestions?

The first three brands should provide a solid amount of power for the mb quarts, each are quality brands, i see directed and eclipse being higher end, but thats just because of what i read on the internet, i would probably go with a eclipse amp or kicker as a second choice.
anyways in either case you'll be happy, just look through the amps that suit the quarts, and find the one that has features that appeal to you.

I personally have never liked 5 channel amps. I find the sub channel is never enough power, esspecially when compared to how much you need to spend to get a 4 channel and a mono block. Generally pretty similar in price but the 2 amp set up gets you more power to the subs. Also the fact that if one amp decides to go one you you dont loose everything. If the 4 channel goes you can run the speakers off the deck till it comes back or if the sub amp goes at least you still have your speakers. With a 5 channel its all or none. Outta the brands you listed I would say the eclipse and the directed are your best choices. I would look at them.

say i were to go with two seperate amps, like ravendarat suggested. should i look at a mono or two channel for the subs? i'm guessin that if i went mono i would just bridge it? and i'm guessing you all don't suggest alpine or jl audio. when i get one i was thinkin about buyin it offline just because i can find cheaper prices. do you all do this or do u buy from a dealer or what? what are the pros/cons to doin it this way?

I'd go mono with the sub amp.  You can get a nice class D that is more efficient than an A/B and will probably provide more bang for the buck.

Dealer = solid warranty, but paying up the ass

Internet = great prices, item might be a refurb, usually a slim warranty

I buy from the Internet because:

1) Use your credit card and you protect yourself against DOA / Damaged items.
2) If an item works for the first month, and isn't abused afterwards, chances are it will work for a long time.  (what, maybe 10% that it will spontaneously fail?)
3) Since the chance of being stuck with a non-working item is probably less than 10%, I refuse to pay the extreme retail markup.

When I'm making more money someday I'll be all about going retail.  I like supporting small business and appreciate the peace-of-mind that a decent warranty provides.  Until then, I'd rather have a better stereo than a worse one with warranty on everything.

alright, so i'm thinking going with a mono amp for the subs. and i'm guessing that if i bridge the two subs then that will be alright, correct?

here's the link for my subs http://manuals.harman.com/INF/CAR/Owner%27s%20Manual/REF%20SUB%201030103212301232%20OM%20FINAL.pdf

how would this amp work http:///.com/dll?ViewItem&category=18797&item=5717575743&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V

would you all go with directed over eclipse? should i even consider alpine, or infinity, or kicker or something like that?

thanks for the help

The only online site that I would trust is Ikesound.com, crutchfield.com, and sounddomain.com. Just because your local dealer says to go with any of those three brands doesn't mean you have to. Alpine, JL, and JBL are great brands also. One thing to consider when buying online from an un-authorized dealer is that if you havn't listened to the speakers before or dont like the amp you usually can't return it.

You have 46 posts...I'll put in a good word for you and see if you can get that edit feature real soon.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

I'd echo customsuburb, it is very important to listen to audio components before buying.  My advice is to listen to a speaker at your local dealer charging you $500 for a speaker pair, then order them online for $300.  Also take a look at brands like Audison, Zapco, Memphis, Diamond, and Xtant for amps.
